Dam Disaster Memorial Renovation Project (31/01/18)

Dolgarrog Community Council received a grant of £10,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund - Sharing Heritage Programme for this worthwhile project to renovate the Dam Disaster Memorial by renewing the information boards and entrance to the walk; clearing footpaths and overgrowth and have a permanent museum /exhibition in the community centre. This is to commemorate the 1925 Dam Disaster where 16 people lost their lives and interpret the history of the village.

Dolgarrog Community Council worked closely with the community to collect information about the disaster. The local school and village youth club were greatly involved in the project and much work was done by them creating visual projects, which are on show in the community centre exhibition.

Further donations were received from the British Dam Society (£5,000), Dŵr Cymru (£5,000) and RWE Innogy (£2,500). Many more people and businesses’ were involved with giving their time and discounts on material.

The extra funding meant we were able to clear more of the site cutting back some of the trees and overgrowth exposing the huge boulders that came down in the disaster. It will also allow us to keep up on future maintenance.

The exhibition can be viewed at the community centre by arrangement.

Dolgarrog Community Council would like to thank everyone that took part and contributed to this project and we feel proud that we can maintain the history of this lovely village.

Dolgarrog War Memorial Garden WW1 Centenary Regeneration

The Dolgarrog community is very proud of what has been achieved at the Memorial Garden following a concerted fund raising effort and work to regenerate the site in time for the WW1 Centenary Remembrance.

The site has undergone extensive refurbishment with the not to be missed giant sculptured poppies standing guard around the Memorial. The work is taking place in three phases, with the first phase having been completed in time for this year’s Remembrance Day Service.

Closure of Dolgarrog Bridge (12/02/2021)

The following is a letter received by Dolgarrog Community Council, from Dŵr Cymru with regards the closure of the Dolgarrog Bridge.

Annwyl Gynghorywyr,

Mae pont Dolgarrog (sy’n cario dwy o’n prif bibellau dŵr dros afon Conwy) wedi’i chau dros dro oherwydd pryderon iechyd a diogelwch am fod y droedffordd bren ar y bont wedi dirywio. Pan gawsom wybod bod problemau â’r droedffordd bren, aethom ati ar unwaith i gau’r bont rhag i’r cyhoedd ei defnyddio. Tra bu’r bont ynghau, rydym wedi bod yn cynnal nifer o arolygon ac asesiadau ar bob agwedd ar y bont. Mae’r rhain yn asesiadau cymhleth iawn gan gwmnïau arbenigol. Maent yn cynnwys archwilio’r adeiladwaith cyfan yn fanwl, yn cynnwys ochr isaf y bont, yr ategion, y pileri, y droedffordd bren a’r pibellau yn ogystal â chynnal asesiadau diogelwch y cyhoedd.

Yn 1982, cytunodd Dŵr Cymru â Chyngor Conwy y byddem yn caniatáu i’r cyhoedd gerdded dros y bont. Gwnaethom hi’n glir wrth y Cyngor erioed nad yw’n llwybr troed dynodedig nac yn llwybr tramwy cyhoeddus ac fe gytunodd y Cyngor â’n telerau ni.

Ers i ni gau’r bont am y tro, cawsom wybod bod nifer o aelodau’r cyhoedd yn symud y ffensys diogelwch a’r arwyddion rhybudd ac yn dal i ddefnyddio’r bont fel troedffordd.

Mae canlyniadau’r asesiadau a gynhaliwyd, yn cynnwys asesiad diogelwch y cyhoedd, wedi codi nifer o bryderon am iechyd a diogelwch. O ganlyniad i’r pryderon hyn, rydym yn cynnal rhagor o arolygon ac asesiadau ac, o ganlyniad i hynny, nid oes gennym ddewis ond cau’r bont yn barhaol i warchod diogelwch y cyhoedd. Byddwn yn dal i wneud gwaith hanfodol ar y bont i’w chadw’n ddiogel er mwyn amddiffyn ein prif bibellau dŵr.

Rydym yn deall y bydd pobl yr ardal a cherddwyr yn siomedig. Ni fu hwn yn benderfyniad hawdd i ni fel cwmni. Fodd bynnag, mae angen i ni ddiogelu cyflenwadau dŵr i’r gymuned leol ac, yn fwy na dim, warchod diogelwch y cyhoedd. Yn awr, byddwn yn gwneud gwaith er mwyn cau’r bont yn barhaol a byddwn yn cyfleu’r neges hon i bobl yr ardal a rhanddeiliaid.

Os yr hoffech drafod ymhellach, mae croeso i chi gysylltu â mi ac fe fyddwn ni’n hapus i drafod unrhyw bryderon sydd gennych chi.

Diolch yn fawr
